White House Lawn
03:27
|
|||
When the word gets around in the neighborhood
that you're back in town and up to no good
I would love to be a fly on the wailing wall
when they find you talkin 'bout those things you saw
go ahead oh they'll listen go ahead
What did they show you on that night
when they came to the farm
with a buzz and a light
did they say you will be a lightning rod
if you breathe a word about them and the gods?
so go ahead go ahead
as in I might care
it's not as if, you know, I wouldn't dare
if the time is right you will see me there
but not until the White House Lawn
look there they are on your little screen
you can click and they're gone just like any bad dream
but let me know if you find something good
I'm well connected in Hollywood
go ahead I'll be your agent go ahead
just like Shirley MacLaine
they'll follow you with an air of disdain
but you'll hold your head up and stake your little claim
front row seat on the White House Lawn

Talkin' to the Turks
03:08
|
|||
Jonas are you seein’ your son and hearin’ what he’s said?
He says they come for him at night in dreams
We’ve heard it all before brother but now it’s gettin’ worse
It’s dark and dirty where they go don’t you know?
he’s Talkin’ to the Turks
talked it over with the grandfather may his soul find peace
he didn’t have a hopeful word to say
he said there’s only lies to come and the boys will fall head first
you’d better save that son of yours from this curse
he’s Talkin’ to the Turks
you know they kill your dignity
he said they steal your seeds
and sow them on a foreign soil
to mingle with the weeds
Jonas, pray to all the gods your son does not succumb
or we might all be taken slave
imagine falling to your knees where all this evil lurks
we would lose our souls and more
they'd turn your wife into a whore
without a chance to even the score
and who knows what they'll take for their gods?
he’s Talkin’ to the Turks

Send in the Lions
04:10
|
|||
in the time after the turn of the century
I remember the day
we saw a broadcast from the whitest company
spinned oh just by the way (when it came time)
he announced there’d been a little gaffe (and what he said)
by now, will sure induce a laugh (but even then)
they added later that some staff had been released
they had been replaced
and now this: you need to buy another family truck
and this little burger only cost a buck
get this trashy look or you’ll be outta luck
take a seat at the coliseum
and Send in the Lions
They ran a clip – the black mustache and noxious fumes
we could all relate
before you know it he’d have instruments of doom
and it would be too late (then recall the time)
when the brother of the candidate (just in time)
made a promise to insure his fate (so he could stand)
and refuse to capitulate to them
who called us infidels
and now this: you need to buy another family truck
and this little burger only cost a buck
get this trashy look or you’ll be outta luck
take a seat at the coliseum
and scream for blood
don’t it make you feel so good?
There goes the neighborhood
Send in the Lions

Independence Day
04:58
|
|||
glanced at the calendar as I rose to start this day
it was blank where they tell if today's a holiday
but I'll wager even money there's a backwater somewhere
celebrating its day of liberation
picture smiles in the streets the only arms are flesh and blood
when the tyrant's day is history flowers sprouting from his mud
let it never be forgot that we have met on battle lines
you and I will set aside this time
I proclaim this day our independence day
when we agreed not to lean and began instead to sway
we can shout from the roof we set each other free on this day
on Independence Day
I declare there's a truce and the peace talks are begun
we will shed no more blood no more tears for this one
the old order is gone but the borders can't be drawn
'til we stand on all four feet
all the heroes and the traitors
all the fools aboard this ship
will give something to their children
to commemorate this trip into battle
about the victories and the ones we were bound to lose
they're bound to hear the bitter side
'til it dawns on us we can choose
let it never be forgot we might meet again on battle lines
would it dawn on us we could choose
to proclaim each day our Independence Day
when we agree not to lean and decide instead to sway
we could shout from the roof
we set each other free on this day
on Independence Day

Bitter Wine
04:03
|
|||
come hear a tale of faithless hearts
the like you've heard before
for why there've been so many such stories
and always will be more
this cheat this coward stole my heart
my time and seed my dough
while her roving eyes set on my friend
I was the last to know
the Bitter Wine I drink today
could be my lasting choice
to join the pack of wary dogs
and only in a victory, to rejoice
is it this or the other way?
not one of us can say
I repeated to her once his curious remark
when I’d just mentionied her name
"well such luck for you!" well much later
I'd know the nature of the game
How little I saw tho she froze in fright
She could not speak a word
But still I laughed it off and the kindest cut
is the one I never heard
the Bitter Wine I drink today
could be my final pledge
to be drunk with power is the way of life
and love is just one more kind of bondage
is it this or the other way?
the Bitter Wine the Bitter Wine
the Bitter Wine I drink today
for now a toast not one of us can say

Face Up
04:11
|
|||
it's a night of the impending storm so batten down the windows
maybe tonight you could make a score you could take a chance
but still those friends who take a dim view of how you might play your cards
could siphon off your steam 'til you can't lay down your guard
it makes no difference what you do tonight
'cause it's out of fashion to stand and fight
now say you don't care just once will do
and you're one step closer to something you would hate
if you only could Face Up
our town's full of pits to fall into
all dressed up like a tart, it's calling you
hands you a drink and a line and guarantees
swallow this you will soon be on your knees
let's go out now and meet the devil
let's go out and see what's new
if you would follow me to heaven
you'll take a detour down here too
it makes no difference what you do tonight
'cause it's out of fashion to stand and fight
now say you don't care just once will do
and you're one step further from something you'd really crave
if you only could Face Up
let's go out now and meet the devil offer pity to the cursed
if you would follow me to heaven we've got a detour down here first
It makes no difference what you do tonight
'cause it's out of fashion to stand and fight
now say you don't care
if you only could
Face Up Face Up to it now
Face Up Face Up Face Up Face Up to it

Blinking Lights
03:16
|
|||
Manny drives the range most days
‘cos someone’s gotta go
if you and I want somethin’ tasty on the grill
I seen him in the diner just yesterday
He told me “mac, there’s somethin’ I just got to spill”
I could see it in his eyes
what i heard could not be lies
turned his ruddy face to porcelain white
another dead steer’s what he’d found
and just like last year’s in Jasperstown he said
there was not a goddamn drop of blood in sight
how about you?
do you just go on about the weather?
how about you?
while you see the rain pourin’ down?
how about you?
if you ever give it time to sink in
with another way of thinkin’
you might notice Blinkin’ Lights
comin’ into view
how about you?
now, Manny’s got a kid in school
that’s why I changed his name
but it doesn’t change the story I was told
he’s on pins and needles about what he thinks
might get into print
and what god forbid they see fit to withhold
they’ll paint him as a fool
‘cause he never finished school
how they’d love to say his tears are just for show
the sheriff brought his camera but never took a shot
I guess he thought it better we don’t know

A Fine Time
06:16
|
|||
there's moment when you notice with a more discerning ear
what they say doesn't quite reflect the facts that have leaked out this year
did you see the report of the frozen guy from ten thousand years ago?
if he carried a message we're not supposed to hear do you think they'd let us know?
no way
it's A Fine Time to tell us and A Fine Time to hear
that somebody way back in our people's time
made the choice in favor of fear for all of us
I would like to introduce to you this friend and his life's work
he's unlocked the words of the people who built the first cities on the earth
it all started with the story that most of us heard of the so-called giants in those days
who were on the earth so the story goes but where in the other days where they?
it's A Fine Time to tell us and A Fine Time to hear
that somebody way back in our people's time
made the choice in favor of fear for all of us
If a way could be found to thaw this guy out and to let his voice be heard
would you listen to all he says he knew and think it's all absurd?
now the tales in the shadows have a different cast
we won't call them gods today
but those black-headed folks said they learned all they knew from them
and it's all set down in the clay
it's A Fine Time it’s A Fine Time it’s A Fine Time to hear

Edge of the Cliff
03:50
|
|||
What if I told you If you don’t love me I will jump?
or if I looked you straight in the eye
and said, you blink it once and I’ll be gone I’ll be gone
if the question smells fishy, take another whiff
it can only be answered right
on the Edge of the Cliff
it’s a long way down
what’s that insurance agent’s number?
if you want to push me off push me off
maybe a big old fish net would do the trick
or Superman could swoop down and catch me
but only if you can manage to think real fast
on the Edge of the Cliff
the slightest breeze
might catch me off balance
and a hurricane, for that matter
is pretty hard to resist pretty hard
you could pray that the westerlies give enough lift
or just admit that we spend our whole lives
on the Edge of the Cliff

Milk Hill
04:43
|
|||
Ted Potts looked out on a stormy morning
across the downs just beneath Milk Hill
and he stood a moment in wonder and dread
said Kathy we'll have visitors many today
he woke his friend on the force in town
who arrived without his rain boots on
and advised Ted by the no trespassing sign
take their names, and their cash
after all good sir it's your land
at twelve o'clock as the news had spread
with the aircraft buzzing on overhead
Mr Potts they cried it's eight hundred feet wide
and the largest display anyone has yet seen
his anger welled and he stood amazed
they waited as he searched for a phrase
who would do this to me? I'll take them to task
they just laughed and said none with red blood in their veins
could ever make such a miracle appear just overnight
there were no footprints here
so embrace the mystery this will be history
when we know how all these circles are made
among the crowd a wily Welsh lad
who had made the claim as some others had
that this kind was their handiwork said in this case
I cannot see how one night would ever suffice
who could ever make such a miracle appear
in one rainy night?
who could engineer four hundred nine
all exquisitely laid?
I wish I knew how all these circles were made
well Ted looked down at the swirling stems
then all across New Jerusalem
the cameras caught him down on his knees
as he wordlessly prayed for a blessed release
and presently he rose to his feet
resolved to let the enigma be
and though doubt remained with him he'd smile
and forever refrain from addressing the matter again
who could ever make such a miracle appear
in one rainy night?
who could engineer four hundred nine
all exquisitely laid?
whoever can say how all these circles are made?
how these circles are made?
so embrace the mystery this will be history
when we know why all these circles are made

Another World
05:31
|
|||
sister and brother meet on a harvest day
beating burning the grain and the sun
she tells about her husband she say he brought her tears today
and the last four nights he’s been with the other one
all these children are mine more glory to god
he can plead with the weight of a race
the brother knows if she never speaks
it’s because of the victory in disgrace
a man and a beast meet out there in the crowded place
pacing posing the horns and the knife
and blood will flow as in seems like every case
where the debt’s to be paid with a life
to slay as an art for the honor we gain
there must be heroes to admire
but who might be appeased who might take the pain
is not left for us to inquire
what makes you think you can say it’s just Another World?
well who are you to judge anyway it’s just Another World
on a darkened street a man and his brother meet
to exchange what they need or desire
anticipation builds and desparate for the thrills
sooner or later one or the other becomes a liar
then the other is dead or in a hospital bed
because the bargain could never be kept
we all felt the shame but the laws stayed the same
some have tried while the rest of us slept
